Adirondacks 2012 is happening !

         RICKA Adirondacks Trip 2012

Once again we will be paddling the waters of the Adirondacks Park.  Camping will be at Rollins Pond state campground.  This campground has over 400 sites that are spread over a large area.  The bathrooms and wash facilities are among the cleanest I have experienced.  The campground is central to all the really good paddling destinations.  You can visit their website by clicking on the link below. http://www.dec.state.ny.us/website/do/camping/campgrounds/rollins.html

The dates will be August 4th – 12th, 2012.  The trips we will be taking are suitable for any type of canoe or kayak.   However, some of the longer trips are more suited to sea kayaks or touring canoes.  As in the past, the trips will be decided by a group vote on the night before.   Camping reservations can be made at www.reserveamerica.com .  The sites A01 – A31 are on the water and would be my first choices.  Please click below to check out the website.  http://www.reserveamerica.com/jsp/commonpage.jsp?goto=/usa/ny/roll/newindex.html

Site capacity is limited to six people with a maximum of two tents.  There are trailer sites available.  Reservations can be made up to nine months in advance, but not a day before that.

Meals are basically on your own.  The nearest market of any size is about a 20-minute ride, please plan accordingly.  We will probably pick one night for a communal potluck supper.

The Adirondacks offers the finest flatwater paddling I have ever experienced.  The variety of pristine paddling destinations in close proximity is unrivaled on the east coast.  Other activities include hiking, biking and all other outdoor diversions.  The Adirondacks Museum in Blue Mountain Lake is a great place to spend a rainy day.  Lake Placid ant the Olympic attractions are about an hour’s drive.  There is also an unsubstantiated rumor that there might be some geocaching going on.

Weather can be “changeable”.  Nighttime lows may drop into the forties and daytime highs can be in the nineties.   Pop-up showers can occur at any time.  I have never spent a week there when it hasn’t rained at least one day.
